The Shimano component range starts with the budget-priced Claris, which is usually found on the most affordable bikes available. Claris is an 8-speed system (eight gears at the rear) combined with either a double or triple crankset (two or three gears at the front). Buy Shimano Groupset: Claris if you’re on a budget. Shimano reckon that most people buying a Tiagra-equipped bike probably won’t be racing it and won’t need the really high gears. The 52/36t, 50/34t and 50/39/30t triple chainset options still provide plenty of range, and 52/36t is just fine for most racers. Pronounced 'alfeenay' as in Italian - Shimano's name for its high-end series of internal-gear hubs and related parts. There are 8-speed and an 11-speed hubs and a front dynamo hub. The 8-speed hub is very similar to the Nexus 8-speed, except that Alfine hubs have a Center Lock fitting for a drum-brake rotor, rather than Rollerbrake splines.
